From OPINEL in Savoy comes this folding knife, size No. 7, designed for scoring chestnuts, preparing garlic, and coring fruit. Not only does it look charming, it also makes a delightful gift for anyone who loves roasted chestnuts. The knife opens via a nail nick and locks securely with the classic Virobloc safety ring, which has been standard on OPINEL knives from size No. 5 onwards. Even though it’s a small folding knife, it sticks easily to a magnetic knife strip.
Tip for chestnut lovers: Soak the chestnuts in hot water first, which makes the shells softer. Then score them with a cross using the sharp, conveniently short blade, and bake them for about 30 minutes at 200 °C. Place a small bowl of water in the oven as well, so the shells are easier to peel afterwards. Delicious, healthy, and even dogs adore them. Chestnuts are rich in vitamin B, minerals, and trace elements, but very low in fat. Being naturally gluten-free, they are also suitable for sensitive four-legged companions.
The short blade also makes it ideal for opening stone fruit or slicing garlic – though don’t expect Luna or Balu (Germany’s two most popular dog names of 2020) to beg for that.
By the way: Marrons are a cultivated form of sweet chestnut, slightly larger and considered easier to peel. And with that, even the dictionary can call it a day.
