Typically German. The term TOLEDO for a pocket knife decorated in this way.
On the one hand, the Spanish city of Toledo, not far from Madrid, was considered a centre of the armourers' trade. On the other hand, it is derived from the inlaying technique practised in Spain.
In the 4th millennium BC, such ‘decoration’ was already practised, which is what the Arabic word ‘tau¨ija’ means. So were bladed weapons, as was the Nebra sky disc. Inlaying combines punching with engraving. In the 1920s, the decorative technique was taught at the ‘Solingen Technical School for Steelware Industry’. A hundred years later, the slim suit knives are still in production. They were made by a hobby craftsman in Solingen for the company's own 1909 RÖDTER line. Nowhere else in the world are knives called TOLEDO.
