You should know this from the outset: The PROGRESS model requires tolerance. No mechanism works without tolerances. If the gap is set too small, the adjustment will jam or quickly become clogged with soap residue. If you tend to be intolerant, “progress” will not be on your side.
For these reasons, the blade gap is never 100% parallel to the soap edge. The inaccuracies have no influence on the shaving result. This is why this model has been manufactured in this design for decades. Back in the 1950s, the 500 PROGRESS model from MERKUR was one of the first on the market with an adjustable blade gap. There is a screw at the end of the handle which can be turned and which also loosens the upper head plate. This changes the distance between the firmly clamped blade and the foam edge. If the gap is small, this results in a gentle setting for daily facial shaving. The larger the gap, the more thorough the effect. The skin type and condition and the beard thickness are taken into account in the final setting, which is facilitated by numbering. Centering is important when clamping the blade, which is done by holding the grease on the short, blunt sides. The handle and lower head plate form part of the two-part model. You can get started, the blade of the first shaving is included. Oh yes, the same model as the A-500 in the sharp store has a triangle engraved on the side of the head.
