From HEROLD: a strop designed for chef's knives and professional knives with two sides made of Russia leather, held on a sturdy wooden handle. The leather stretched over the wood has no slots, which means that the strop does not spring back during the grinding process. This is an advantage when sharpening chef's knives, but for straight razors, a “springy” design is preferred. The two leather sides can be coated with polishing paste, but these must never be mixed. The colors green, red and black are used for coarse, medium and fine polishing. A strop of this kind is used after sharpening on the stone.

Russia leather is cowhide that has been tanned in a special way, which includes rubbing in birch tar oil.
