The company was founded by Robert Herder in Solingen in 1872. Since then, knives of exceptional quality and shape have been manufactured under the sign of the windmill. There are only a few products that are still manufactured in the same way today as they were a hundred years ago. There have been repeated attempts to improve the classic kitchen knife. Ultimately, however, the shape and material properties have remained unchanged to this day because they cannot be improved.
‘Thin, coarse, nailable’ - even after 130 years, this maxim of the early days still applies. Many of Solingen's best hand grinders have demonstrated their sharp skills here in all the years of ROBERT HERDER's existence. One of the best was Wilfried Fehrekampf, who died in 2011. He was one of the few true master sharpeners who mastered the traditional Solingen sharpening technique to the very end. He produced the fine ‘blue-blued’ knives and the Kirschbaum series. The most elaborate of the traditional Solingen sharpening techniques.
You can recognise such a blade by the refraction of light, which appears as a bluish rainbow shimmer in the fine grinding marks.
ROBERT HERDER WINDMÜHLENMESSER is committed to the tradition of manual labour. As a training centre for Solingen's specialist trades, the company guarantees the passing on of the knowledge it has acquired.
