A classic – guilloché, not guillotined.
According to hearsay, guilloché engraving was invented by the Frenchman Monsieur Guillot and the German Hans Schwanhardt. Guilloché refers to engraving geometric patterns made up of fine lines, spaced at perfectly equal distances. These lines are painstakingly cut into the metal by hand using special tools.
And guillotining? That’s the art of separating heads from bodies as a form of execution – courtesy of an apparatus conceived by Dr. Guillotin. The prototype was actually built by a harpsichord maker in the late 18th century. His name? Tobias Schmidt. And yes – you guessed it – he was also German. Surprised?
