Houndwood, also known as Honduras, is an extremely dense and therefore very hard, durable wood from the rosewood family.
Its fine grain is a light reddish to almost black streaked brown.
It comes from controlled forest cultivation in Central America and is felled using the so-called “eco-logging system”. Transporting the tree out of the forest becomes oxen's work. This is because oxen are harnessed to the barge to avoid damaging the forest floor.
Originally, Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua were referred to as “banana republics”. These countries were tropical fruit exporters in which the power of US companies Chiquita and Dole was greater than that of the local populations and governments.
