A fire starter made of a mixed metal makes it possible for more than just kites to produce sparks.
Magnesium filings are scraped off the block with the help of a steel scraper. Sparks can then be struck over the ferrocerium rod, igniting the magnesium filings. In German, ferrocerium is also known as “Auermetall”, which means “iron metal”. The Austrian chemist Carl Freiherr Auer von Welsbach patented the alloy in 1903. I had to look this up, because in chemistry I had a window seat with an always tempting view.
