Scharfer Laden offers this HUBERTUS outdoor knife in various lengths and with different handle materials.
To ensure safety, a solid brass guard prevents the hand from slipping forward onto the blade spine.
The blood groove – a term that may sound quite martial – primarily serves to reduce the weight of the blade. That’s all it does.
There are also theories suggesting that such a groove – technically known as a fuller, and informally nicknamed a "Kalle" – reduces vacuum resistance when withdrawing the blade from a body during combat.
The term "Fahrtenmesser" (literally "trekking knife") or "Sportmesser" was used for the knives that Kuno Ritter, founder of HUBERTUS, began producing in Solingen in 1932.
In the 1970s – the era when these Finnish-style blades were originally forged – the term "outdoor knife" (borrowed from the U.S.) became popular in Germany. It refers to a fixed-blade knife designed with various handle options for different outdoor activities.
Scharfer Laden also offers modern versions of this knife, including models with stag horn handles and stainless steel blades. These come with a leather sheath, available with different types of rivets and stitching, sometimes bright, sometimes dark – depending, perhaps, on how the night’s dreams went...
