“Balonit” – a name that sounds almost poetic today. In truth, it’s a nostalgic echo of a time when three-wheeled cars rattled through the streets and sidecars were the height of adventure.
This curious handle material, usually seen in black or red, is a concoction of shellac, rubber, and magnesia – an odd but enduring recipe. You can polish it all you want; it will never shine. And water? It tolerates it only briefly before sulking. However, camellia oil seems to win its favor.
The HUBERTUS GRÄFRATH is a genuine work knife, not a showpiece for glass cabinets. Its maker likely left his fingerprints on the blue-tinted blade — something that would make a plumber, electrician, or carpenter smile rather than complain. After all, their hands aren’t exactly spotless either.
If ever a crime scene investigator were to hunt for prints on this model, they’d be in for a puzzle. Science still debates how a fingerprint truly forms. One theory says that tiny cells beneath the skin shape the ridges – the so-called Merkel cells, named after the same “Merkel” who left her mark not only in politics but also, apparently, in dermatology.
A tough knife, a story-rich relic – and, as the Rolling Stones sang:
“There ain’t a woman that comes close to you.”
Warehouse clearance – while stocks last.
