Because the company with the name of a fish marten has bought up the products of the manufacturer MERCATOR. Whose founder in the 19th century elegantly translated his last name "merchant" into Latin with the name MERCATOR.  
But how does one come to call a brand OTTER? In any case, in the 19th century, also the time when this knife company was founded, those cute little animals lived by rivers and streams in the Bergisches Land. The OTTER company was a grinding shop operated by water. In those days, people lay on their stomachs, bent over a huge grindstone. And because this was not only exhausting, but also very cold, since the stream flowed under the craftsman, dogs were brought along as heating pads. These then lay in the knee bend as a warming counterweight.
