Starck was born in Paris on January 18, 1949.  He is the son of Andre Starck, who was an aeronautical engineer.  He says his father often inspired him because he was an engineer who made inventing a "duty." Philippe Starck studied at the École Camondo in Paris, and in 1965 he won the furniture competition "La Vilette" and in 1968 founded a company for inflatable objects. In 1971 he became artistic director at the Pierre Cardin studio. In 1980 he founded the company Starck Products.

In 1982, he designed the private rooms of then President François Mitterrand at the Élysée Palace. He became the celebrated star designer of the 1980s, especially in the United States and Japan. The interior design for the Café Costes in Paris (1984, closed 1994) became world famous.
From restaurants to hotels, from furniture to room modules, French designer Philippe Starck has left his mark on more than 10,000 designs. While working for Adidas, Starck founded his first industrial design firm, Starck Product, which he later renamed Ubik after the novel by Philip K. Dick. He began working with manufacturers in Italy (Driade), Alessi, Kartell, and also internationally. Among the manufacturers were Drimmer in Austria, Vitra in Switzerland, and Disform in Spain. His concept of democratic design led him to focus on mass-produced consumer goods rather than one-offs, and to look for ways to reduce costs and improve the quality of mass-market goods.  Starck also collaborated with the French mail-order company 3 Suisses in this effort.

In 1983, French President François Mitterrand chose Starck to renovate the president's private apartments in the Élysée on the recommendation of his culture minister, Jack Lang.  The following year, he designed the Café Costes.  Starck's design expanded to furniture, decoration, architecture, street furniture, industry (wind turbines, photo booths), bathroom fixtures, kitchens, floor and wall coverings, lighting, household appliances, office equipment such as staplers, utensils, tableware, clothing, accessories, toys, glassware, graphic design and publishing, food, and vehicles for land, sea, air, and space.  In 2018, he began designing interiors for the living module of the world's first commercial space station.
