K for cat.
The name of the original manufacturer was Kaufmann. Translated into Latin it would be MERCATOR. Heinrich Kaufmann built the Mercator knife as an all-rounder from 1867. His company address was Hochstraße 55, and the second K stands for cat. Which roams around on the hilt.
The GIs brought these simple, flat pocket knives to the States after the Second World War. While in their country of origin, Germany, they are known as Kaiser Wilhelm knives, there it was the "Black Cat Knives" that quickly achieved cult status.
Since 1995, the Otter knife factory has been producing MERCATOR models in over one hundred work steps. Still handcrafted.
