The company was founded in 1872 by Robert Herder in Solingen. Under the sign of the windmill these knives have been produced ever since, known for their exceptional quality and distinctive shape. There are only a few products in the world that are still manufactured today exactly as they were more than one hundred years ago. Over the decades there have been many attempts to improve the classic kitchen knife. In the end, however, the shape and the material characteristics have remained unchanged because they simply cannot be improved.
“Thin, sturdy, nail flexible” – even after more than 130 years this principle from the founding period still defines the philosophy behind these knives. Many of the finest hand grinders of Solingen have demonstrated their sharp craftsmanship at ROBERT HERDER over the years. One of the greatest was Wilfried Fehrekampf, who passed away in 2011. He belonged to the small group of true grinding masters who still mastered the traditional Solingen grinding techniques. From his work come the famous “blue polished” blades and the renowned Kirschenbaum series – one of the most elaborate traditional grinding methods of Solingen.
Such a blade can be recognized by the way light breaks across the fine grinding marks, creating a subtle bluish rainbow shimmer.
