Three ESU steels were used for the Damascus. Why?
ESU - Electro-Slag Remelting - improves the steel properties. Lowest sulfur and phosphorus contents, hardly any sulfidic and oxidic inclusions, highest toughness properties in longitudinal as well as transverse direction. Fine-grained microstructure due to continuous solidification, highest homogeneity.
The outer sides - 51 layers - are closed using the tungsten inert gas welding process, TIG for short, which creates a vacuum. There is no need for welding consumables such as borax.
The damask package is then heated to the desired welding temperature in an electric furnace, and the steels weld themselves together under pressure.
Bahia rosewood is a rosewood species. Very hard, very dense, very brittle and available only in few quantities. Predominantly yellowish with a pinkish tinge, the woods come from eastern South America. Due to their precious status, they are under CITES protection and are only used for luxury items. In English, all rosewood species are called "Rosewood". Unfortunately, there are also some that are not rosewood.
Accordingly, Gertrude Stein's sentence: "A rose is a rose is a rose" is true, but not that every rose is also rosewood.
