Backenheft cutlery, forged from a single piece of stainless steel, manufactured in over 120 different steps. All knife blades are produced in the highest and most complex stage of the Solingen pliesst technique, the so-called "blue pliesst". The steel is ground finer step by step in several passes, using emery leathers with a grain size of 180 to 320. This work requires so much experience that it is only mastered in a few Solingen workshops. You can recognize a blue-gritted blade by the fact that it shines cleanly and a faint blue shimmer appears in the grooves when exposed to a certain amount of light. The blades of the Backen forged cutlery are made of 1.4116 chrome-molybdenum-vanadium steel, i.e. genuine forgeable material, in a stainless version with brass rivets. The individual parts are made from a single piece in a renowned Solingen forge.
As early as the end of the 19th century, a Vesper cutlery set appeared in Solingen with handles that were framed by steel at the top and bottom, the so-called "Backenbesteck". An original that has since been copied worldwide. For a long time only available as a knife and fork model, the cutlery was expanded by the August Merten company from 1910 to its current variety with dessert, fish, fruit and serving pieces. Many manual operations are then necessary until the filigree shapes of the metal have been worked out and the handle scales precisely fitted. Finally, the subtle elegance of this cutlery stands out when finely polished or matted.
