In order to keep the "oldest knife in France" for a lifetime, the knife maker has already mounted a metal lanyard loop. To this you can attach a cord or chain for the purpose of securing against loss of the knife.
NAVETTE means shuttle. Because the cutting tool is small and handy and fits in any pocket, it reminded the wealthy bourgeoisie of a gliding weaver's shuttle. Which is also called NAVETTE in French. With the classic you get a tool for handicrafts, but also for travel, as well as hiking, where something has to be cut, a capsule lifted, the can opened and the wine cork pulled. Nice is the NAVETTE. It belongs to the "Modèles anciens". Templates, which created earlier knifemakers of NONTRON, which are still issued today as a tribute to the "Maîtres couteliers", that is, the master knifemakers. Which instead of jaws on a French knife say "mitre" and instead of sinker "ressort". As soon as they speak of a "couteau pliant". Sounds more elegant than "Feitl". Which is derived from folding, because the pocket knife is foldable. That was a show with the pointed mouse for adults.

Im Mittelalter findet man die "Messer aus dem Pierregord" in Aufzeichnungen in Paris. Im Rahmen ihrer Wanderschaft wurde für die Pariser Handwerksgesellen ein Aufenthalt in NONTRON zur Pflicht, um Ihre Künste zu perfektionieren. Damit wurde eine über Jahrhunderte währende Tradition begründet. Im Jahre 1788 verzeichnet das Betriebsregister von Bordeaux 39 Messerschmieden im Périgord, fünf davon in NONTRON (damals 2800 Einwohner), die sich durch die aussergewöhnliche Qualität ihrer Arbeit hervorheben, und die acht Arbeiter beschäftigen. Man berichtet von bemerkenswerten Messern berichtet, die sich durch ihre geringe Größe und besondere Fertigungsqualität auszeichnen. Man exportiert sie auch als als Kuriositäten: Miniaturmesser in Nuß- oder Haselnußschalen, die ursprünglich entstanden als Geschenk der Messergesellen, um ihren Angebeteten zu imponierten. Anfang desdes 20. Jahrhunderts stellt  eine Arbeiterin aus NONTRON einen skurilen Rekord auf, indem sie 154 mikroskopisch kleine NONTRON-Messer in einem Kirschkern unterbringt. Die Firma Bernard, die 1780 gegründet wurde, hatte derzeit beispielsweise Taschen-, Metzger- und Tafelmesser, Scheren, Rasiermesser sowie chirurgische Instrumente in ihrem Sortiment. Das Wasser des Bandiat garantierte die besondere Härtung der Stahlklingen und der Buchsbaum der Umgebung, der Charante und aus den Causses du Quércy lieferte das Material, aus dem die Griffe gedrechselt werden. Er ist das dichteste und härteste der dort einheimische Hölzer und zwar oft so dicht, daß er nicht mehr schwimmt. Es dauert 40 bis 80 Jahre Wachstum und Reife und ausserdem Jahre der Trocknung, bis die besondere Stabilität und Feinheit der Maserung erreicht wird. Diese Qualitäten sind in ganz Frankreich bekannt. Und in seinen in der Normandie spielenden historischen Romanen legt La Varende im 18.Jahrhundert diese Messer oft in die Hand seiner Protagonisten.  Die NONTRON-Messer waren nicht nur in der Pariser Unterwelt sehr beliebt, sondern wurden auch besonders vom Bürgertum und den Aristokraten geschätzt...
